An opinion poll published on Sunday showed that nearly two-thirds of Spaniards believe that former king Juan Carlos - who left the country last week amid a financial scandal - should not have gone abroad.

Juan Carlos is accused of receiving a billion-dollar Saudi bribe, and said earlier that he was at the disposal of the Spanish public prosecutor.

And Carlos - who abdicated the throne in 2014 - suddenly announced his decision to leave last Monday, and there was no official confirmation of his destination, but a newspaper loyal to the royal throne said that he had left for the Emirates.

The poll conducted by the Sigmados Foundation for the newspaper El Mundo revealed that 63.3% of those polled expressed their dissatisfaction with the departure of the 82-year-old former king, while 27.2% supported his departure.

About 80.3% said they believed that Juan Carlos should have faced possible legal measures, and 12.4% believed that he was not guilty, while 7.3% did not express their opinion in this regard.

And last June, the Spanish Supreme Court opened a preliminary investigation into Juan Carlos' involvement in a contract for a high-speed railway in Saudi Arabia, after the Swiss newspaper La Tribune de Geneva reported that he had received $ 100 million from the late Saudi king Abdullah bin Abdulaziz. Switzerland has also opened an investigation into the incident.

The former king of Spain is not under official investigation and has repeatedly refused to comment on the accusations.

On Monday, Carlos' lawyer said that his client is at the disposal of the Spanish public prosecutor, despite his decision to leave.

The pro-monarchy "ABC" newspaper reported - on Friday - that Juan Carlos traveled by private plane from Spain to the UAE on Monday.

Other media said he is in the Dominican Republic or Portugal, and officials there said they were not aware of his arrival.

On Sunday, a Spanish government spokeswoman declined to comment on the former king's whereabouts, and his lawyer and the royal palace declined to disclose his whereabouts.
