The Taliban described the meeting resolution as radical and "hard core", reports Reuters.

"To remove the obstacles before the start of the peace talks, to stop the bloodshed and for the good of the people, jirga approves the release of 400 prisoners, which the Taliban requested," participant Atefa Tayeb said according to AFP.

Afghan authorities and the Taliban government have previously agreed to release a certain number of prisoners each, before settling down and negotiating peace agreements. The release of the last 400 prisoners, several of whom are described as "high-risk prisoners" and who are accused of crimes such as deadly attacks on Afghans and foreigners, has therefore become a politically charged stumbling block.
