- The situation is very critical for cod, which is a key species in our marine ecosystems. It is a popular food fish and fishing is an occupation for many people, says Gunvor G Ericson (MP), State Secretary at the Ministry of the Environment to the radio.

Among the more than ten proposed measures are a reduction in the seal population, more gentle and selective fishing, measures against eutrophication and the planting of Norwegian cod on the west coast.

- The proposals are about tackling the diversity of underlying causes that make cod feel so bad, says Ericson.

"A lot needs to be done"

The government will now take a closer look at the proposals. Ericson would have liked to have seen action before.

- A lot needs to be done in the future. Of course, it would have been even better if measures had been taken as early as the 1990s.
