Fourteen people were killed and 15 seriously injured when a passenger plane derailed after landing in heavy rain in India, police said Friday.

The Air India Express plane was carrying more than 190 people, including crew, to Calicut airport in the southern state of Kerala when the accident occurred. "I can confirm at least 14 deaths. 15 other passengers were seriously injured. The situation is still evolving," a senior policeman, Abdel Karim, told AFP.

"According to initial reports, rescue operations are continuing, and passengers are being transferred to hospital to receive medical care," the Ministry of Civil Aviation statement said. There was no fire in the plane, according to the statement.
