08 August 2020The 111th edition of the Milan-Sanremo ends on the wheels of Wout Van Aert. At the finish line in via Roma, at the end of an unprecedented route of over 300 kilometers, and with an oppressive Augustan heat, the Belgian rider wins the first classic-monument of the season (which had been postponed due to the pandemic) by beating at the end of a beautiful and long sprint for two Julian Alaphilippe, 2019 champion and therefore very close to a great double.

The big group arrives under the banner with a gap of just 2 ”and is regulated by the Australian Michael Matthews, who precedes the Slovak Peter Sagan. Fifth place for an excellent Giacomo Nizzolo, first of the Italians.

The race was decided as always on the Poggio, when a series of attacks started including that of the 'shark' Vincenzo Nibali, winner in 2018. However, Van Aert took off, at -6.5km from the finish. and Alaphilippe, with the first who got the better of the transalpine at the photo finish after a spectacular battle shoulder to shoulder. The 25-year-old Belgian, three-time cyclocross world champion, confirms himself as the absolute protagonist of this restart of cycling, repeating the success obtained a few weeks ago at the Strade Bianche in Sanremo.
