New reports, new measures and highlights: an update on the latest developments in the Covid-19 pandemic around the world.

- Nearly 722,000 dead -

The pandemic has killed at least 721,902 people around the world since the end of December, according to a report established by AFP on Saturday at 11:00 GMT.

Almost 19.5 million cases have been officially recorded in 196 countries and territories, of which more than 11.5 million are now considered cured.

The United States remains the most affected country with nearly 161,358 dead. Next come Brazil (99,572 dead), Mexico (51,311), the United Kingdom (46,511) and India (42,518).

- Latin America, the most bereaved region -

Latin America and the Caribbean are the region of the world most affected in terms of death toll from the novel coronavirus.

With at least 215,859 deaths, this region overtakes Europe, which accounts for 212,794 deaths.

Brazil, the second country in the world in number of deaths, is close to the 100,000 mark killed by the virus.

Mexico has passed the 50,000 death mark and Colombia that of 12,000, while India and the African continent reach two million and one million confirmed cases respectively.

- Turkmenistan: WHO examinations authorized -

The World Health Organization (WHO) has obtained permission to independently collect and analyze samples in Turkmenistan, which claims to be spared from the coronavirus pandemic, expressing "concern" at the increase in cases of "negative pneumonia to Covid-19 "in this country.

Since the start of the pandemic, this former Soviet republic has continued to describe as "false" information indicating the appearance of the coronavirus on its territory.

- Football resumption interrupted in Peru -

The Peruvian government decided on Friday to suspend professional football matches in the country after the first resumption match of the first division tournament, which pitted Universitario against Cantolao, at the Nacional de Lima stadium.

The decision was made because several players from different teams tested positive for the new coronavirus but also because Universitario supporters flocked to the area around the stadium to celebrate the club's 96th birthday and cheer on their team during the game behind closed doors. .

- Employment to the penalty in the United States -

The US economy created 1.8 million jobs in July, well below the 4.8 million jobs created in June, the Labor Department said on Friday.

The resumption of activity was in fact slowed down by a virus which spread even more vigorously in a large part of the country.

The unemployment rate, however, fell to 10.2% in July, from 11.1% in June.
