A vegan political party announced on Thursday that it had obtained the 20,000 or so citizen sponsorships needed to run for parliamentary elections in Denmark. This is a historic first in the country.

“At this precise moment, Veganerpartiet [the party of the Vegans] obtained 20,182 sponsorships. We have achieved our goal! The party welcomed on Twitter. Founded in 2018, this movement will be able to compete for the first time in the Danish parliamentary elections, which must take place no later than 2023.

"We cannot claim to be an environmentalist while supporting the agricultural industry"

Veganerpartiet presents itself as the "new green party of Denmark". Its ideology is based on "vegan thinking", according to which "all species have, like the human species, the right to live freely" and not to "suffer". In the elections, the party will campaign around an essential idea: to abolish breeding. "We want all breeding aimed at benefiting humans to be banned," said the party spokesperson.

Asked about their hopes to change Danish policy, the activist assures us that their mere existence "will create the debate, and will make it evolve". “The interest of animals is a topic that no other party in Denmark is carrying,” he added. For him, "you cannot claim to be an environmentalist while supporting the agricultural industry" or by eating meat or any other product of animal origin.

To stand in the legislative elections, a total of 20,109 sponsorships are necessary if the party does not already have an elected deputy. Sponsorships must then be validated by the kingdom's Ministry of Social Affairs and the Interior.
