• Politics. The Parliament will debate the request for the abdication of Felipe VI and the "flight" of Juan Carlos
  • Newspaper Archive: The Parliament reaffirms its reprobation of the King and self-determination

That the Catalan independence parties are divided is not a novelty, but if one takes into account the way of wasting going against one of the State institutions, such as in this case the monarchy, preferred by sovereignty over an electoral struggle, the climate shows end of legislature and tensions in the Govern. And, as much as the president of the Generalitat Quim Torra asked for when requesting a plenary session in the Parliament, JxCat and ERC do not agree on a joint text against the figure of Felipe V I for the departure of his father Juan Carlos from Spain as a result of the open judicial investigations.

While JxCat, with Torra at the head, they ask for equal responsibility to Felipe VI, such as the abdication, and to the Government for facilitating the departure of the king emeritus, yesterday the deputy of this parliamentary group Elsa Artadi demanded the resignation of Pedro Sánchez, ERC maintains that responsibilities must be "focused" on the current monarch. The vice president of the Govern and national coordinator of ERC, Pere Aragonès, assured that the important thing is to ask Felipe VI for "responsibilities" and that "we do not try to divert, but rather focus on the monarch", referring to the intention of his partners in the Generalitat to ask for resignations and reproofs to the Spanish Executive.

Aragonès believes that the current monarch "is a king is because he is the son of a corrupt king, not because no one has chosen him" and believes that "it is necessary to correctly focus on what and where the problem is: the existence of an anachronistic monarchy that in the Spanish state, by definition, is a corrupt institution and obviously you have to ask for explanations but fundamentally from the monarch ».

Regarding the Government, Aragonès believes that he must clarify his "role" in the departure of the King Emeritus, although he considers that the true "responsibilities" are those of Felipe VI. ERC's position is very different from that of its JxCat partners, who yesterday demanded the resignation of Sánchez, considering that his government is behind a "state operation to protect" the king emeritus "of Swiss justice."

The Parliament has already debated the King

Regarding the plenary session on Friday, Ciudadanos (Cs) presented a request for reconsideration before the Parliamentary Table so that it is not held, since they consider that the Catalan chamber has no powers over the monarchy. They recall that the Constitutional Court (TC) has previously positioned itself against the Parliament being able to pass resolutions on the Casa del Rey. Also the president of Catalunya en Comú Podem in the Parliament, Jéssica Albiach, announced two resolutions to demand a consultation on the future of the monarchy and measures to fight against "corruption and impunity". In addition, she asked for the support of the PSC to position itself in favor of debating the "form" of the head of state.

It will not be the first time that the Parliament has debated the monarchy or censured Felipe VI. In the last plenary session, on July 21, the pro-independence majority claimed the abdication of Felipe VI for his role in the application of 155 in 2017 and his speech after 1-O. In October 2018, a disapproval of the monarch was approved, presented by the commons, and the abolition of an "expired" institution was requested, which was suspended by the Constitutional Court, when estimating the Government's appeal, understanding that the Parliament does not have these attributions.

Since then, the independence parties have tried to circumvent the control of the Constitutional in their proposals against the monarchy, posing as declarations of intent, such as the last one passed last November together with a resolution to claim the right of self-determination, which caused the Prosecutor's Office to open an investigation against the president of the Parliament, Roger Torrent, for alleged disobedience. The court forbade the admission to process and debate of this CUP proposal as it violated the beginning of the political process in favor of independence that was declared unconstitutional.
