Yesterday, SVT published a secretly filmed video - taken by the animal rights organization Djurrättsalliansen. The video shows how hens are squeezed to death and beaten with sticks at Sweden's largest egg producer - CA Cedergren in Mönsterås.

Swedish Eggs is an industry organization for companies in the Swedish egg industry. Chairman Jan-Olof Bohlin thinks the incident is tragic.

- You get sad and sad when something like this happens, he says.

"Costs too much money"

The organization Swedish Eggs has inspectors who regularly carry out inspections on egg producers' farms to ensure that animal husbandry is good. They check, among other things, that the hens have free zones, food quality and the feathers of the hens.

But these checks are not carried out in the evening or at night. It is too expensive and too difficult to implement.

- That people work at night costs a lot of money. But even if they were to work at night, I have a hard time seeing how the work could be carried out in practice - you see nothing when it is dark. And it must be dark at night, otherwise the hens will be scared, says Jan-Olof Bohlin.

May lose the pink buck

Swedish Eggs' rules council is now taking over the matter. They will investigate the case. If the inspectors discover deficiencies that the company does not remedy, the company can get rid of the "pink goat" on its eggs.

The pink goat stands for "certified Swedish egg quality", according to the Swedish Eggs website. The buck is a guarantee that the management meets the industry's requirements for animal welfare, food safety and infection control.
