Pompeo calls on Afghanistan to release Taliban prisoners

“It is our understanding that they will decide on the speedy release of the remaining Taliban prisoners from their lists - this is the last obstacle to the start of intra-Afghan negotiations,” Pompeo said in a statement released by the US State Department.

He stressed that "the size and volume of future US assistance" to this country depends on the settlement of the intra-Afghan conflict.

Earlier, the Afghan government released 317 Taliban from prisons in Parwan province.
