Several Swedish breeders that SVT Nyheter Öst spoke to testify to a huge demand.

- Before, it was much more difficult to sell puppies. Received an email a month now, it is three, four emails a day, says Arne Jonasson who together with his wife runs the kennel Bimlis in Bona outside Motala. They have been raising dogs for over 30 years.

Things puppies before mating

He also says that many things nowadays puppies even before the mating has taken place. At the same time, Arne Jonasson wants to emphasize that they are careful that the puppy purchase is well thought out.

"It must be well thought out"

- You should not buy a dog just because the children want it. It must be well thought out and you must be able to take care of the animal, which we are careful to investigate, he says.

That there is a great demand for puppies is something that the Swedish Kennel Club also confirms. They write on their site that the demand is greater than the number of puppies for sale.

More applications for permits

The County Administrative Board in Östergötland also notices the interest, as more and more breeders are applying for permits to take more litters.

- In June alone, we received 15 applications, which is far more than usual. So it is noticeable that you want to take an extra litter this year because the queue is so long for puppies, says Maria Leclercq, head of the department for animals, rural areas and food.

The Swedish Board of Agriculture's statistics on newly registered puppies show the clear trend. In the first five months, the number of newly registered puppies increased by ten percent compared to 2019.
