The inspection was carried out after the Swedish Transport Agency received reports that trams running in SL traffic had serious faults.

It turned out that carriages that served the Lidingö line and Spårväg City had brakes that did not work properly or that were incorrectly fitted. In addition, several wheels have not been properly seated.

- We take the shortcomings we have seen very seriously, that the wheels and brakes are bad due to routine shortcomings of the safety steering system. Our focus is now on ensuring that the routines are reviewed to prevent this from happening again, says Tomas Åkesson Matts, section manager at the Swedish Transport Agency.

Tvärbanan's trams have also had faults in the brakes - something which, among other things, has led to some carriages now running slower in traffic in a street environment (20 km / h instead of 30 km / h).

"Could have led to derailment"

Stockholm's Tramways run the traffic on the Lidingö line and Tramway City.

When the Swedish Transport Agency asked the company what consequences the shortcomings could have had, Stockholms Spårvägar replied that "the wheel can fall off which could lead to derailment".

When Arriva, which runs the traffic on the Tvärbanan, was asked what consequences faults in the brakes could lead to, the company replied "that in the worst case it could cause derailment if, for example, an incorrectly mounted suspension would drop and fall on the track".

Serious security flaws

The Swedish Transport Agency states that several vehicles driven in traffic have had faults that can affect traffic safety and that the safety deficiencies could have "major consequences with a risk of damage to both property and person".

Arriva and Stockholms Spårvägar must now report on how to remedy the shortcomings. The companies must have responded to the Swedish Transport Agency no later than 7 August.
