The Mauritanian President, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazwany, on Thursday afternoon mandated the engineer, Mohamed Ould Bilal, to form a new government, hours after the resignation of the government led by the engineer, Ismail Ould Cheikh Sidia.

The outgoing Prime Minister stated that he submitted the resignation of his government to President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani. He did not provide any reason for the resignation in the brief statements he made to reporters, but the resignation was expected after the government referred to the judiciary an investigation that included corruption charges against several current ministers.

The parliamentary investigation dealt with the deals during the era of former Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, but many ministers of that era hold ministerial positions during the era of the current president.

The new Prime Minister Mohamed Ould Bilal asked members of the resigned government to continue their work until a new government is formed.

The new first minister is a water engineer. He previously assumed the ministries of transport and housing, in addition to several high-ranking jobs. Before his appointment to head the government, he was a consultant in the office of the resigned prime minister, Ismail Ould Cheikh Sidia.

His autobiography shows that he was born in 1963, hails from the state of Atrarza, and in 1990 graduated as a lead engineer from the Higher School of Water in Algeria.

The resigned government was not more than a year old, but changing it became a popular and political demand, given that some of its members were involved in corruption cases described as significant.

The Mauritanian prosecution announced today, Thursday, the investigation of cases of financial corruption involving the symbols of the former President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz and officials of the resigned government.

The Al-Jazeera correspondent in Nouakchott reported that the police began investigating officials accused of corruption cases after the government resigned.
