The head of state, Emmanuel Macron, is in Beirut on Thursday, two days after the powerful explosions which devastated a large part of the Lebanese capital. Beyond immediate aid to a devastated city, it will address the issue of longer-term support for a deeply destabilized country.

Emmanuel Macron goes, Thursday, to Beirut, the Lebanese capital blown by two deadly explosions, Tuesday evening. During this visit of barely a day on the spot, the Head of State will bring his "strong support" to the Lebanese people, while France and Lebanon are historically very close. The French president will also consider long-term aid, because the country of the Cedar is in difficulty in more than one way.

"International mobilization"

In addition to the close ties between the two countries, Emmanuel Macron wants to help respond to two emergencies: quickly deliver material aid and consider longer-term aid. The head of state therefore wishes to organize in the coming days, says the Elysee, an "international mobilization" by videoconference.

But Emmanuel Macron also wants to "ensure that the aid is as effective as possible", explains his entourage. In other words, that it is used correctly, in a country in serious economic and political crisis and where corruption is ravaging.

An expected development

During his visit, Emmanuel Macron will therefore meet the Lebanese leaders. A real development is expected, as in Paris the exasperation has mounted in recent weeks vis-à-vis a political class accused of not reforming the country.

"At some point, we want to help, but the Lebanese authorities must also take matters into their own hands," criticizes those around the President. Visiting Beirut two weeks ago, Jean-Yves Le Drian strongly warned the authorities that without reform, France would not provide new financial assistance to Lebanon, whose economic indicators are in the red.
