Basel (dpa) - Eintracht Frankfurt clearly missed the “wonder of Basel”. Despite great fighting spirit, the Bundesliga side could not turn the 0: 3 from the first game in the second leg of the Europa League second leg at FC Basel and lost 0: 1 (0: 0).

This means that the semi-finalist of the previous year will not be at the final tournament in North Rhine-Westphalia from August 10th to 21st. 40 days after the last competitive game and after only one week of training, the Frankfurt team lacked fine-tuning and precision. Fabian Frei (88.) scored for Basel.

Eintracht coach Adi Hütter forced everything on the offensive card and offered three strikers in Bas Dost, Daichi Kamada and André Silva. "If you want to catch up 0-3, you can't play with a top," he had said before the kick-off. This tactical route did not lead to a countable goal against the 20-time Swiss champion until the break, which was by no means limited to defending the comfortable lead.

Hesse's hopes of a sensation had almost been dampened in the 7th minute, but Omar Alderete narrowly put his header past the left post. The Frankfurters were also lucky in the 16th minute when Evan N'Dicka deflected a shot from Silvan Widmer and the ball landed on the goal net with luck. Eintracht had the first big chance three minutes later: after a precise cross from Filip Kostic, Martin Hinteregger headed just a few centimeters above the crossbars.

FC Basel, which had only finished the national championship on Monday, continued to counter this with quick counterattacks. With a brilliant defense Eintracht goalkeeper Kevin Trapp prevented the gap in the 27th minute when he parried a shot from Widmer with his foot. Shortly after the change of sides, the national keeper fended off a hard shot from Widmer (49th) with a strong parade.

After that, it was the Frankfurt team who really put the pressure on and that substitute Goncalo Paciencia (52nd), Danny da Costa (54th) and Dominik Kohr (56th) had good opportunities to take the lead.

But it remained a game with goal scenes on both sides. In the 62nd minute, FC captain Valentin Stocker shot the already empty Eintracht goal, but Kostic thrashed the ball away from the line. Frankfurt did not give up, but could not really be dangerous to the Super League third 147 days after the first leg. Frei met shortly before the end.
