About a hundred residents of Tunte , the capital of the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Gran Canaria) , set up barricades on one of the town's streets on Wednesday to oppose the transfer of a group of immigrants to their former school residence quarantined .

Dozens of residents of this town, of 596 inhabitants, cut the street that gives access to the residence with garbage containers, cardboard and glass recycling tanks, branches and pruning remains .

The concentration was convened through social networks , WhatsApp messages and phone calls, after the news reached the town that the Government Delegation was going to move there a group of quarantined sub-Saharan immigrants who arrived on the island on last Sunday.

The transferred are part of the group of 71 people who have spent several nights staying under Red Cross tents at the Arguineguín dock , waiting for a reception resource to be assigned to spend the mandatory quarantine in the covid protocol.

In the place where they are going to be lodged in Tunte, which also manages the Red Cross, 80 other African immigrants have resided for months, who arrived in previous boats.

In some of the messages that have circulated in the call for this protest, the condition of possible bearers of the coronavirus is alluded to by the people who will be quarantined there.

In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, the acting mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Samuel Henríquez (Nueva Canarias), also refers to these people as "twelve immigrants suspected of covid-19" .

A spokeswoman for the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands has remarked to Efe that none of the immigrants who are going to be transferred to Tunte to pass the quarantine that is required of everyone who arrives by boat to the islands has tested positive for PCR in those that have been submitted in these three days.

Beyond the health issue, the acting mayor focuses the opposition to this transfer on two points: on the fact that his City Council has not been consulted (he claims to have heard it from the neighbors) and, above all, evictions to derive to other parts of the island to the other 80 immigrants who lived there and who "had integrated into the town and participated in its activities."

"This level of integration has taken months, it has not been easy for anyone but, finally, they had become one more neighbor, we are talking about people looking for a new life and to integrate. At Tunte we have succeeded, we do not understand this decision ", Add.

Tunte is the capital of the main tourist municipality of the Canary Islands, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, the third most important in the country in hotel overnight stays, after Madrid and Barcelona. But, unlike the beach that gives it its name as a destination, Maspalomas, is located inland, at 900 meters of altitude.
