• Colombia: The Colombian Supreme Court decrees the arrest of Álvaro Uribe

Álvaro Uribe's party began to wage a battle to reform Justice, a state power that they consider politicized and in the hands of its detractors. Senator Paloma Valencia, one of the most fervent defenders of the former President, launched the proposal to go to a Constituent Assembly as the only way to give a 180 degree turn to an institution that is discredited , as polls always indicate, and not because of the controversial decision to order his house arrest if not for the corruption scandals that they are leading. But this prevents that in a country as polarized as Colombia, one party applauds the Supreme Court and another repudiates it.

The deprivation of liberty, said the aforementioned court, motivated her for "possible risks of obstruction of Justice, regarding the future collection of evidence of allegedly criminal acts." For the uribistas, however, it is not enough reason and they blame the fact that they released Jesús Santrich, former FARC commander, despite the warnings that he would escape, as in the end it happened, and then he joined the criminal gang that formed dissidents of the aforementioned guerrilla.

The Constituent Assembly, in any case, has little chance of prospering and puts President Iván Duque in an uncomfortable situation, who must overcome the desire of his party, outraged by the situation of Uribe, to prevent them from abandoning the herd.

"I believe that President Duque's injustice (of house arrest) moves him" to support the initiative, Valencia said. But the president's priority is to avoid the advance of the pandemic , which is at its peak this month, and later recover the country's economy. The "mandatory isolation", which began in March and will run until the end of August, is leaving many sectors on the verge of collapse and it will not be easy to carry out the legislative projects that this purpose requires. Therefore, diverting attention with the Constituent Assembly, in some legislative chambers that it does not control, can complicate his last two years in government.

As for the immediate future of Uribe, who is at his farm "El Ubérrimo", in the department of Córdoba, where he spent the successive quarantines, the Supreme Court has 120 days to investigate the file of alleged procedural fraud and witness manipulation in order to determine whether to close the case or move on. Another effect of the measure will be the loss of his senatorial seat, a severe setback for his party. No one ignores that Uribe is the only one who maintains peace between the different leaderships and who sets the course.

"I hope that the former president can appeal to all the tools to protect his rights and exercise his defense in freedom ," Iván Duque told the local FM radio station on Wednesday morning, despite the criticism he has received from the opposition for meddle in the work of Justice. And he reiterated that "a person who fought terrorism and crime" should defend his innocence in freedom.
