The Esmeralda case was resumed today in Norrköping, where a three-year-old girl was found dead in her parents' home. In June, the district court ruled that convincing evidence had emerged that the mother had negligently caused the girl's death. Since then, she has undergone a forensic psychiatric examination, which showed that she is not mentally ill.

Should be convicted of murder

During the trial, the prosecutor argued that she should be convicted of what she was charged with - murder with 14 years in prison as a punishment.

In court, the lawyer said that the investigation shows that it is drug abuse that is behind the crime. He would rather see contract care as a sanction. Should she be sentenced to prison, the mother should receive a discount considering that she has been in custody for five months.

The district court will announce the verdict on August 6.
