The government of Moldova has denied any responsibility for the devastating explosion that rocked the Beirut port yesterday, and it is believed that it was caused by a large shipment of ammonium nitrate material that arrived in Lebanon aboard a ship sailing under the flag of Moldova.

Today, Wednesday, Sputnik-Moldova quoted the head of the Moldovan Water Transport Agency, Igor Zakharia, as saying: "The information is not enough and the ship has not been sailing under our flag for a long time."

He continued: "It does not matter under what flag the ship that carried out the transfer was traveling sailing, and the occurrence of any repercussions related to the shipment, such as this explosion, does not mean that the ship bears in one way or another responsibility for storing the shipment improperly in the port and does not mean certainly that the ship is guilty." .

According to the data received, the said shipment of ammonium nitrate, whose weight is estimated at 2750 tons, was confiscated in 2013 from the "Roussus" ship, which was sailing under the Moldova flag, as the Lebanese authorities prevented it from leaving the port and its owners abandoned it after a short time.

Ship Aristide.com, a network that deals with legal claims in the shipping sector, stated that port authorities had transported the dangerous cargo to the port warehouses, due to the risks related to keeping ammonium nitrate aboard the ship.
