The corona pandemic has taken a heavy toll on the country's municipalities and regions. In the Sörmland Region, the largest dropout during the spring was lost revenue from public transport, which has decreased by 80 percent. Missed dental visits and reduced tax revenues are also noticeable in the region's economy.

Increased costs

And the effects of the pandemic are expected to last for some time to come, according to Monica Johansson (S), chair of the regional board in Sörmland.

- We will see a need for rehabilitation of covid patients, increased mental illness and we also believe that there may be a second wave, she says.

Municipalities and regions have already this year received 21 billion in increased state subsidies to deal with the corona pandemic. When the government presented its crisis support in April, extra state subsidies of SEK 12.5 billion were also promised for both 2021 and 2022.

Tax increase not applicable

Sweden's municipalities and regions, SKR, fear, however, that many municipalities and regions will need to raise taxes. But there is still no talk of Region Sörmland.

- Raising the tax is not our first thought, says Monica Johansson (S), and continues:

- The autumn looks reasonable for us thanks to the supplements we have received. But it is incredibly important that the government comes with early information about what it will be like in 2021.
