The number of people born in the last year was 866,908, which was the smallest since the start of the survey, while the number of people who died was 1,378,906, the highest, and the number of people who died was "natural decrease" exceeding the birth rate. By prefecture, Tokyo had the highest number of people at 132,57596, followed by Kanagawa and Osaka, and Tottori had the lowest at 556,195.

The population has increased only in the three metropolitan areas of Tokyo, Kanagawa, and Okinawa. Tokyo has grown by nearly 70,000, the 24th consecutive year of growth.

Saitama started to decrease for the first time since the survey started, and Chiba decreased for the first time in 6 years.

The largest decrease was in Hokkaido with approximately 42,000 people for the eighth consecutive year.

By municipality, the largest increase was over 10,000 in Fukuoka City, while the largest decrease was over 6,000 in Kitakyushu.

On the other hand, the population of foreigners is about 2.86 million, which is an increase of about 200,000, or 7.5%, for the sixth consecutive year.

By prefecture, Tokyo has the largest number at approximately 580,000, followed by Aichi at approximately 270,000 and Osaka at approximately 250,000. The lowest was Akita with about 4,300.
