The first vice-president of the Government, Carmen Calvo, has stated this Wednesday that Juan Carlos I "does not run away from anything, because he is not involved in any cause", while stressing that this decision "does not mean any change in the Headquarters of the State "or in the work of Felipe VI" in his constitutional role. "

Speaking to journalists in Oviedo, before meeting with the President of the Principality, Adrián Barbón, Calvo has stated that the fact that the King Emeritus has decided to establish his residence outside of Spain "does not mean that he is not at the disposal of our country".

"The King emeritus does not run away from anything because he is not involved in any cause," he said when asked by the parties that are judging the facts before justice itself.

After insisting that the departure from Spain of King Juan Carlos does not mean any change in the Head of State, Carmen Calvo has assured that the Government has "an impeccable, fruitful and necessary relationship with Felipe VI".

The Government "is in its task"

"We believe that it is absolutely good for the institution and, naturally, for Felipe VI in his impeccable work for our country, in the present and in the future that will require unity and coordination" to face the coronavirus pandemic and social and economic recovery.

The Government, he added, "is in its task and in its constitutional work in absolutely perfect coordination with the Head of State and King Felipe VI."

Asked about the position of Podemos, his government partner, before the Juan Carlos I march - which the leader of the purple formation , Pablo Iglesias, has described as "flight" -, Calvo has pointed out that the political parties can maintain their positions in a democratic, diverse and free society.

Regarding the withdrawal by some councils of the name of Juan Carlos I from their streets, he has considered that it is a matter for local administrations. Calvo participates this Wednesday in Tuña, the birthplace of the Asturian general Rafael del Riego , in the commemoration of the bicentennial of his military pronouncement that gave rise to the liberal triennium (1820-1823), a figure for whom he has vindicated his memory for having worked "for liberties, on the side of the people and against any type of totalitarianism".

In his opinion, his example must serve "as a message from the present" and "not only from the past", since society should not settle in "forgetfulness".
