04 August 2020 Estoril, Portugal, is the new home of the emeritus king of Spain, Juan Carlos, who announced yesterday that he left the country following the revelations about alleged secret funds in Switzerland. The Portuguese television Tvi reports it, without citing sources.

Estoril is the place where Juan Carlos spent part of his childhood, at the time of the exile of the royal family, and is located in the municipality of Cascais, where Umberto II of Savoy also lived from 1961. Local authorities, consulted by the agency Efe, they could not confirm the arrival of the eighty-three year old king although last week Mayor Carlos Carreiras had declared himself ready to welcome Juan Carlos "with open arms".

The emeritus king communicated yesterday to his son, King Philip VI, his decision to leave Spain to safeguard the prestige of the Crown, after months of news that had irreparably deteriorated the image of a monarch that was extremely popular. In particular, the latest information on the 65 million donation to the lover Corinna Larsen, hidden from the taxman, had rekindled the debate on the legal inviolability of the king's person. With a leftist government in office - moreover thanks to the vote of Basque and Catalan independence - Juan Carlos has tried with his estrangement to prevent the discussion from leading to a constitutional review that would turn against his son. Even after leaving Spain, Juan Carlos will retain the title of emeritus king that had been recognized after his abdication in June 2014.
