• Brexit Breakdown Special

Brexit has triggered the immigration of British citizens to the countries of the European Union. According to data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), revealed by The Guardian , the exodus of Britons to the 27 EU countries has risen 30% since 2016.

Between 2008-15, the number of UK immigrants to the EU was 56,832 on average per year. Starting in 2016, the year of the Brexit victory in the referendum, the figure has risen around 73,642 immigrants annually, with France, Germany and Spain as between 2016 and 2018 there was also a spectacular increase of 500% in the number of Britons applying for nationality in European countries. In Germany, the increase was even 2,000%, with a total of 31,600 Britons applying for citizenship.

"We are talking about figures of a magnitude similar to what occurs in times of great political or economic crisis," acknowledged The Guardian Daniel Auer, co-author of the study sponsored by the University of Oxford in Berlin and the Center for Social Studies in the capital German.

The study reveals that many Britons made the decision to leave their country "in a quick and impulsive way", with a relative risk factor and taking into account economic considerations.

"The leap in nationality claims in other countries shows it is evidence of how people have made the decision to emigrate out of fear of the impact of Brexit on their lives, " the report said.

The study detects the exodus that occurred in the first three years, during the political struggle between London and Brussels. The trend continued at least until the end of 2018, although at the moment there are no data on the impact after the end of Brexit on January 31, 2020 or on the effect that the coronavirus pandemic may have had throughout the current year. .
