US President Donald Trump suggested that the explosion that shook the Lebanese capital, Beirut, on Tuesday noon, was caused by a "kind of bomb" attack.

"I spoke with a number of military officials, and they told me that the Beirut explosion appears to have been caused by a bomb, and it appears to be an attack," Trump said.

At the start of his daily press conference on the emerging corona virus (Covid-19), Trump reaffirmed the United States' sympathy for Lebanon, reiterating its willingness to help.

"We have a very good relationship with the people of Lebanon, and we will be here to help. It seems like a terrible attack," he told reporters at the White House.

A huge explosion shook the port of Beirut, in which dozens of people were killed and thousands wounded, and echoed throughout the city, as the facades of the buildings were shattered and their porches collapsed.

The High Defense Council in Lebanon declared the capital Beirut a disaster city, and submitted a recommendation to the government to declare a state of emergency after the explosion.
