Preparations for the inauguration of the San Giorgio Bridge in Genoa, August 1, 2020 - Riccardo Arata / IPA / SIPA

For the head of government Giuseppe Conte, the event will symbolize no less than a “new Italy which is recovering”. The country is preparing to inaugurate this Monday with great fanfare the new Genoa bridge, two years after the collapse of the old one which killed 43 people. For the Prime Minister, the disaster remains a "wound which will hardly heal".

The inauguration will be especially marked by the absence of the families of the victims. They refused to participate in this event and will meet again ten days later to mark the second anniversary of the tragedy. On August 14, 2018, in heavy rain, the Morandi motorway bridge, named after the engineer who designed it, collapsed and resulted in it falling dozens of vehicles, on the road to vacation or work .

A 1,067-meter-long viaduct

Since then, Italy has worked hard to build the new 1,067-meter-long viaduct, designed by the architect from Genoa Renzo Piano. The last section, about 1 km long, was laid at the end of April and since the finishing works and safety tests have followed one another.

In addition to Giuseppe Conte and Renzo Piano, the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella will be present at the inauguration which is however threatened by a weather alert, heavy rains being expected during the day on Monday in Liguria, the region of Genoa.
