Xinhua News Agency, Taipei, August 3 (Reporters Wu Jihai, Fu Shuangqi) Taiwan’s China Economic Research Institute announced on the 3rd that Taiwan’s July manufacturing purchasing managers’ index (PMI) turned to expansion after three consecutive months of contraction, climbing 6.9 percentage points To 54.1%; non-manufacturing purchasing managers' index (NMI) continued to rise 3.3 percentage points to 57.3%.

This is the first time since the outbreak of the new crown pneumonia epidemic that Taiwan’s PMI and NMI have shown simultaneous expansion. In this regard, Zhang Chuanzhang, the president of the Chinese Academy of Economics, pointed out that Taiwan is a trade-oriented economy, and the global situation is not good now. It is too early to say that Taiwan's economy is back on track.

PMI and NMI take 50% as the prosperity and decline line, and the index is higher than 50%, which means that the economic prosperity is in a state of expansion; less than 50%, it means that the economy is shrinking.

Among the six major manufacturing industries, the food and textile industry, the transportation industry, the chemical and biotechnology and medical industry, the electronics and optics industry, and the basic raw materials industry have all shown expansion, while the power and mechanical equipment industry has shown contraction.

Manufacturing new orders, production volume, and labor employment index have all turned to expansion. Manufacturers' outlook for the next 6 months continued to increase by 5.2 percentage points to 49.3%, showing that although manufacturers believe that the economy is better than before, they are still quite conservative about the subsequent economy. . Zhang Chuanzhang pointed out that the main reason is that the industry is worried that the second wave of the global epidemic is still very severe, and that the epidemic may affect the schedule of new machines for major technology companies.

In the non-manufacturing sector, among the eight major industries, only the information and communications industry has shown contraction, while accommodation and catering, finance and insurance, retail, construction and real estate, transportation and storage, education and professional science, and wholesale have all shown expansion . Zhang Chuanzhang pointed out that the wholesale and overseas tourism industries related to foreign trade still expressed concern about the second wave of the epidemic.

The labor affairs department of the Taiwan authorities announced the latest unpaid leave statistics on the same day. In this period, the number of unpaid leave entrepreneurs was 1,122 and the number was 27,085, an increase of 73 and 1,877 from the previous period. Among them, the number and number of entrepreneurs who implemented unpaid leave in the manufacturing industry continued to hit a new high since the epidemic, reaching 372 and 17,508.

The number of unpaid leave in some industries in the service industry has also rebounded. Among them, there are 346 wholesale and retail enterprises implementing unpaid leave with 4,891 people, an increase of 14 and 113 from the previous period.
