• Royal House Juan Carlos I communicates to Felipe VI his decision to leave Spain
  • Monarchy: Doña Sofía, the hurt and great harmed by the departure of Don Juan Carlos from Spain

The decision of King Juan Carlos to go live outside Spain is not going to suppose any change in the situation of Queen Sofia, who is going to maintain her residence in the Zarzuela Palace and continue with her institutional activity, as she had been doing since the relief on the throne six years ago.

The mother of Felipe VI, who is on vacation at the Marivent Palace in Palma, has been left out of the controversy since she had no relationship with the alleged businesses in which the King Emeritus could participate.

Don Juan Carlos and Doña Sofía have been estranged on the sentimental plane for several years, although they have maintained residence in Zarzuela as members of the royal family after the abdication.

The decision of the previous monarch to withdraw from the public sphere in June last year did not affect Queen Sofia, nor her official agenda.

Doña Sofía has always represented a reference for Felipe VI and has recognized it in public on several occasions.

The last one was in December 2018, in honor of the 40th anniversary of the Constitution, when he praised "the permanent and committed support" of his mother one month after his 80th birthday.

In May 2017, she also expressed her "appreciation and admiration" for "the great example" that she supposed and for the "humanity and commitment" shown in favor of the most disadvantaged.

Due to the pandemic, Doña Sofía has seen her agenda cut so far this year, in which she has only had half a dozen official acts, including the veneration of the Christ of Medinaceli and the concert of the victims of the Holocaust, all they starred before the state of alarm.

Since then, she has only been seen twice, in two meetings of the board of the Reina Sofía Foundation in Zarzuela, outside the institutional program, surrounded by her closest collaborators and protected with a mask.

The first meeting took place on June 3 and the last one, on July 14, in the middle of a storm because of the news published about don Juan Carlos.

Since the abdication, the role of Doña Sofía has diminished, although, in addition to her activity as part of the royal family, she has continued to show her most supportive side, supporting initiatives such as that of combating plastic waste at sea.

He lived his most delicate moment in April 2018 in the cathedral of Palma, when he starred in a disagreement with Queen Letizia when he wanted to be photographed with his granddaughters Leonor and Sofia.

Before the public withdrawal of King Juan Carlos a year ago, Doña Sofía starred in some acts with him that came to be interpreted as a reconciliation of marriage, although they did not continue.

Between these meetings, there were some events with friends, such as when they went to the wedding of the tennis player Rafael Nadal in Mallorca in October 2019 or to his academy on the island a few months earlier.

During 2020, she was only seen with Juan Carlos I at the beginning of the year at the funeral and funeral of his older sister, the Infanta Pilar de Borbón, and at the widow of the first president of the Cortes after the reinstatement of the monarchy, Torcuato Fernández-Miranda.

As she is used to doing every summer, Queen Sofía is already at the Marivent Palace in Palma, where she arrived a few days ago with her eldest daughter, Infanta Elena, and her sister, Princess Irene.

Her sister has been her great moral support for several years and who usually accompanies her to public events, in addition to residing with her in Zarzuela part of the year.

With her he traveled to Athens in early February to attend the presentation of the diaries of his mother, Queen Federica, along with her other brother, Constantine.
