He noted that by now "the acute period of the pandemic, associated, among other things, with the need for total self-isolation, has passed."

“Thanks to prompt and timely action, we have generally managed to ensure the safety of citizens,” Medvedev quotes TASS.

He said that in the first half of 2020, the number of "registered crimes even slightly decreased - by 0.1% and amounted to just over one million."

At the same time, Medvedev said that "the number of illegal acts related to the sale of drugs via the Internet has also increased significantly - by approximately two-thirds."

Also, according to him, "against the background of a difficult socio-economic situation, network extremism has become a significant danger."

According to the deputy head of the Security Council, in the first half of 2020, "442 extremist crimes were registered," which is "a third more than in the same period in 2019."

In addition, he said that according to a survey by the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, "about 40% of migrants, almost every second, have lost their jobs."

This, as Medvedev noted, "certainly creates such a breeding ground potentially in this area (the growth of crime. -  RT) ."

He said that "not all countries have been able to avoid rampant crime, the most obvious example of this is the United States of America, where the fight against coronavirus infection is especially difficult and the situation remains extremely unstable."

“We certainly need to do everything so that our events develop according to a completely different scenario,” added the deputy chairman of the Security Council.

In early June, Medvedev announced the possibility of a prolonged rise in the crime rate in Russia due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
