The National Board of Health and Welfare's medical register, which has existed since 1973, includes data for all children born in Sweden. It contains, among other things, information about pregnancies, births and newborns. The figure is used for official statistics and research.

- It is therefore important for both purposes to have nationwide data. To be able to present statistics by region requires that the dropout rate is not too great, writes Milla Bennis at the National Board of Health and Welfare in an email.

1,298 children are missing

However, a system error in Region Västerbotten's medical record system meant that 1,298 children were never reported to the register. In a letter to the Västerbotten Region, the National Board of Health and Welfare writes that "you are asked to send us complete information as soon as possible".

- Västerbotten has a medical record system Obstetrix which is an old system and does not work very well. The problem with dropouts from Obstetrix is recurring for several regions, says Milla Bennis.

The regions have different frequencies to report and Västerbotten reports electronically a few times a year. The system error should now be resolved according to the region.

- The error has been fixed for some time but does not seem to have broken through yet, says Jennie Liling Ståhl.
