Nuclear power plant operation at UAE Pointing out concern about first safety management in Gulf oil-producing countries 20:52 on August 2

UAE = United Arab Emirates, the first nuclear power plant in a Gulf oil producing country to operate. While aiming to reduce energy dependence on natural gas, concerns about safety management have been pointed out.

According to what UAE's national news agency reported on the 1st, it was the first unit of the Baraka Nuclear Power Plant in the west that was in operation.

The Baraka Nuclear Power Plant was aiming to receive orders from the Japanese and American corporate coalitions, but the Korean corporate coalition received the order in 2009, and is proceeding with the maintenance of four nuclear reactors.

Until now, UAE has mainly used thermal power generation using natural gas, and it is the first time for a Gulf oil producing country that has relied on fossil fuels for energy production to operate nuclear power plants.

It seems that the UAE aims to reduce its dependence on natural gas for energy, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by introducing nuclear power plants, and appeal its environmental efforts.

The government plans to operate the remaining three nuclear reactors one after another, eventually producing 5600 megawatts, which is a quarter of the domestic electricity demand.

On the other hand, what is of concern is the safety management of facilities.

The UAE has been intervening in the Yemeni civil war in the same Middle East and is supporting the Yemeni rebels who are fighting against the Houthis, but the Houis are continuing to missile attacks on their opponents Saudi Arabia. It has been pointed out that the Baraka nuclear power plant could be the target of attack.
