Of the 47 municipalities in Västra Götaland that responded to the National Board of Housing, Building and Planning's survey, 21 of the municipalities state that they have a deficit in group housing, service housing and specially adapted housing. Something that the magazine Hem och hyra was the first to report on.

According to Marianne Fagborg, chairman of the organization Funktionsrätt Göteborg, this is a problem that has been built up for a long time.

- There are many who stand in line for a long time. For people with disabilities, it is more difficult not to have a home. You are more dependent on others and may not find it as easy to move in with someone temporarily, she says.

Priority issue

According to Funktionsrätt Sverige, Gothenburg is one of the municipalities with the greatest shortage of housing for the disabled. And according to the municipality itself, it is a priority issue that they are trying to address.

- We have had a queuing situation for a long time where we have not been in balance. But it is a group that we prioritize together with other groups. We are constantly working to highlight the problems in the city, says Linda Wenthe, area manager for housing planning for the disabled in Gothenburg.

Signs of improvement

However, there are two municipalities in western Sweden, Härryda and Bengstfors, which report surpluses in housing for people with disabilities. And 28 municipalities state that in five years they will have a balance in the housing situation for the disabled, which may indicate a brightening for the future.
