A former cabinet minister and current British Conservative MP has been arrested on charges of rape and sexual assault, according to police and the Sunday Times . The politician's name has not been revealed but Metropolitan Police said they have opened an investigation into charges of assault and sexual violence committed in four separate incidents, according to a statement.

“A fifty-year-old was arrested on Saturday August 1 on suspicion of rape. He was released on bail ”and should appear in mid-August, police said. According to the Sunday Times newspaper , the charges were brought by a former parliamentary assistant and target a senior Conservative party official, former minister and MP.

A spokesperson for the Conservative Party, quoted by the Press Association news agency, said "accusations of this nature are taken extremely seriously" but declined to comment further.
