  • Sentenced to five years in prison for causing a loss to Société Générale, Jérôme Kerviel still has to pay him one million euros in damages since 2016.
  • On the sidelines of a hearing before a committee of the National Assembly on July 8, the former trader indicated that he was now working as a "consultant".
  • The bank's lawyers immediately wrote to him asking him to indicate his income, hinting at his debt.

Bad accounts make old enemies. Société Générale has not completely abandoned the idea of recovering from Jérôme Kerviel the million euros in damages that it still owes him under the decision rendered on September 23, 2016 by the Court of Appeal of Versailles (Yvelines).

According to our information, the bank's advice this week sent a letter to the former trader's lawyer to inquire about his activity and current compensation. The goal is clear: to know what his intentions are in order to repay his debt.

“Roughly speaking, I have an advisory and networking activity. And conference. "

The initiative owes nothing to chance. As 20 Minutes revealed, Jérôme Kerviel was heard, on July 8 at the National Assembly, by the commission of inquiry on the obstacles to the independence of the judiciary. At the end of this hearing which lasted a little over an hour and twenty minutes and during which he spoke of the judicial dysfunctions of the case which bears his name, the former trader also revealed that he was currently working.

"I am a consultant," replied the former employee of Société Générale to a question from deputy (LREM) Didier Paris. Roughly speaking, I have a consulting and networking activity. And conference. The answer did not go unnoticed by the managers of Société Générale. They therefore immediately requested more information in order to know what income the native of Pont-l'Abbé (Finistère) currently has.

The bill now amounts to a little over 1,140,600 euros

Sentenced to five years in prison, three of which were closed for causing a loss by taking risky positions on the markets, Jérôme Kerviel had seen, in 2016, the amount of damages go from 4.9 billion to 1 million euros. So had decided the Court of Appeal of Versailles which had pointed the finger at “the partial responsibility” of the trader but also “the failing organization” of the General company having contributed to its own loss.

If the bank could never have recovered 4.9 billion euros from its former trader, it did not hesitate to claim this million damages from him. From January 2017, she had the content of Jérôme Kerviel's bank accounts seized. Except that the former trader was never able to pay off his debt. As the law provides, the bill continues to increase month after month with legal interest. According to our information, the note amounts today to a little more than 1,140,600 euros.

After a restructuring, Societe Generale presented, in 2019, a net profit down 21.2% to 3.25 billion euros.

Contacted by 20 Minutes , Jean Reinhart, the lawyer for Societe Generale simply indicated that the bank "did not comment on the recovery procedures it is entitled to carry out with regard to its debtors". Julien Dami Le Coz, the advice of the former trader, did not wish to speak either.
