The scene on this street in La Paz , Bolivia, freezes the blood. The corpse of a young man lies next to a woman who mourns him and who has had to notify the police so that, in the event of the collapse of the health system , they take care of him.

It is not an extraordinary image. Since April, the Bolivian police have collected 3,300 corpses in houses and streets throughout the country, 80% of them with previous symptoms compatible with Covid-19 . Special brigades, such as the one in the city of El Alto, have suffered up to five hundred and twenty-seven infections among their ranks.

The cameras have recorded one of the hardest moments that an agent has lived: the notification of the death of a baby of just a few months. The official death figures in Bolivia do not reflect this situation at all .

And it is that Bolivia continues to set a record of cases due to the coronavirus pandemic. This Thursday, Bolivia set a new record for deaths from coronavirus in the country, with 88 deaths in a single day .

The latest report from the Ministry of Health brings to 2,808 deaths from the disease in Bolivia since the first cases were detected last March, imported from Europe. The confirmed positives reach 73,534 in the country, with 22,506 infected that passed Covid-19, according to the Ministry.

The interim president of Bolivia, Jeanine Añez , overcame the illness and resumed her public activity this week after having remained in isolation at the official residence in La Paz.

The previous daily record of deceased was from July 23 with 79 deaths and the new mark occurs at a time when the contagion curve presents saw teeth, with days when it rises and the following day falls.

These data place Bolivia among the countries most affected by the pandemic in terms of its population, of about eleven and a half million inhabitants, according to studies such as those prepared by the Johns Hopkins University in the United States.

These studies show Bolivia as the seventh country in the world with the most deaths from this disease per 100,000 inhabitants, with a percentage of 24.73%, and the ninth in terms of deaths with respect to the confirmed positives of the new coronavirus , with a 3 , 8%.

Bolivia has declared states of sanitary emergency and public calamity , to combat the disease, with a quarantine that has been expanded in stages according to a risk map of the new coronavirus in each municipality and region of the country.
