July 31, 2020 The account of the coronavirus pandemic on the economy has risen. The GDP recorded the lowest value in the second quarter since the first quarter of 1995, the start of the current time series: the decrease was 12.4%, that is, compared to the first quarter, and 17.3% % in tendential terms that is compared to the second quarter of 2019. ISTAT announces it.

Istat reports that the second quarter of 2020 had one less working day than both the previous quarter and the second quarter of 2019. The cyclical change in GDP in the second quarter "is the synthesis of a decrease in added value in all production sectors, from agriculture, forestry and fishing, to industry, to the complex of services ". On the demand side, there is a negative contribution both from the national component (gross of inventories) and from the net foreign component.

The Italian economy recorded an "unprecedented" contraction in the second quarter: Istat explains that the drop in GDP is the result of the "full unfolding of the economic effects of the health emergency and the containment measures adopted". The fall in GDP, explains the institute of statistics, "is located within an international context where the main economies are experiencing reductions of a similar scale due to the spread of the pandemic".
