July 31, 2020 Hong Kong Governor Carrie Lam has announced that the September 6 political elections have been postponed due to the Covid-19 emergency. Lam, at a press conference, spoke of a "serious pandemic situation" in the former British colony, adding that he has "support in taking this difficult decision" by the central government of Beijing. "It is the most difficult decision of the past 7 months."

The spate of new Covid-19 cases in Hong Kong is weighing on the political elections: these are "internal issues" of China, Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said, postponing the vote on the policies of September 6th.
