In early July, there were reports of a mysterious and sudden mass death among elephants in Botswana. Viruses, anthrax, poaching and poisoning have all been mentioned as possible causes.

Now the preliminary test results have been presented and there are many indications that it is natural toxins, ie toxic substances produced by plants, animals and microorganisms, that are behind the deaths, reports Reuters.

- It is highly unlikely that a viral disease is behind this, says Cyril Taolo, head of the authority for wildlife and national parks in Botswana.

Tests left to analyze

Cyril Taolo points out, however, that there are still tests that must be analyzed before the cause of death can be determined. Among other things, they are waiting for laboratory results from South Africa and the USA.

Botswana is home to about a third of Africa's elephants, but its population has been declining for some time due to poaching.
