"One Marine was killed, eight soldiers were reported missing and two were injured in an incident with a US Marine amphibious vehicle on July 30 off the coast of Southern California," the US military said on Twitter.
The servicemen belonged to the 15th Expeditionary Force of the Marine Corps.
A search and rescue operation is underway.
It was previously reported that 59 people were injured in a fire on a ship in San Diego.
