30 July 2020 Compared to May 2020, in June the decrease in employment and the growth in the number of job seekers continues, at a slower pace, against a decrease in inactivity. The unemployment rate goes up to 8.8% (+0.6 points) and, among young people , to 27.6% (+1.9 points). Istat announced this, stressing that the recovery of the number of hours worked per capita also continues.

The decrease in employment on a monthly basis (-0.2% equal to -46 thousand units) involves women (-0.9% equal to -86 thousand), permanent permanent employees (-0.4% equal to -60 thousand) and the under50, while the employed increase among men (+ 0.3% equal to + 39 thousand), temporary workers, self-employed workers and people over the age of fifty. Overall, the employment rate drops slightly, reaching 57.5% (-0.1 percentage points).

The increase in people looking for work is substantial (+ 7.3% equal to + 149 thousand units), mainly for men (+ 9.4% equal to + 99 thousand units, against + 5.0%, equal to + 50 thousand, of women) and affects all age groups.

Again according to Istat, the decrease in the number of inactive people (-0.7% equal to -99 thousand units) is recorded among men (-2.5% equal to 131 thousand units) and among minors under 64, compared an increase in inactive women (+ 0.4% equal to + 31 thousand). Overall, the inactivity rate dropped to 36.8% (-0.3 points). On average in the second quarter of 2020, compared to the first quarter, employment was clearly down (-2.0% equal to -459 thousand units) for both gender components.

In the quarter, people seeking employment also decreased (-15.7% equal to -364 thousand), while inactive people aged between 15 and 64 increased (+ 5.9% equal to + 793 thousand units). The repeated economic downturns in employment led to a significant drop compared to June 2019 (-3.2% equal to -752 thousand units), which involves both gender components, employees (-613 thousand), self-employed (- 140 thousand) and all age groups; the only exception are the over50s (+ 102 thousand). The employment rate drops by 1.8 points in one year.

Over the twelve months, job seekers fell significantly (-11.5%, equal to 286 thousand units), while inactive people aged between 15 and 64 increased (+ 6.8%, equal to + 899mila). "In June 2020 - Istat notes - the data on the labor market describe a trend which confirms a tendency to a decrease in employment levels, albeit at a more contained pace, a recovery of hours worked per capita and a progressive expansion in the area of ​​jobseekers. Since February 2020, the level of employment has fallen by about 600 thousand units and the number of jobseekers has decreased by 160 thousand, against an increase of inactive people of over 700 thousand units. In four months, the employment rate lost one and a half points, while the unemployment rate, with the June figure, is approaching February levels ".

82.4% of employees awaiting contract renewal
At the end of June, 52 employment contracts are awaiting renewal and relate to approximately 10.2 million employees - 82.4% of the total - which corresponds to a salary total equal to '81, 6%. Istat points out that underlining that both shares are higher than those observed both at the end of the previous quarter (in March 2020 equal to 80.4% and 79.9% respectively), and twelve months earlier (in June 2019 equal to 42.0% and 44.2%). "The share of employees awaiting renewal from the beginning of the year remains stable over 80% - explains the institute in the comment - attesting to the highest values ​​in the series".

At the end of June 2020, the national collective agreements in force for the economic part (21 contracts) concern 17.6% of employees - around 2.2 million - and a total salary of 18.4% of the total. In the period April-June 2020 no new agreements were transposed, while one (textiles, clothing and knitwear) has expired. The average waiting time for renewals for workers with expired contracts has slightly increased, from 15.8 months of June 2019 to 16.6 months of June 2020, while the average expectation calculated on the total number of employees more than doubled: 13.7 compared to 6.6 months.
