The NGO Amnesty International was alarmed on Thursday at the fate of 2,000 Yazidi children, freed from the clutches of the jihadist group Islamic State (IS) but now alone in the face of the demons of trauma and injuries, physical and psychological. According to a new report from the NGO, 1,992 children of this millennial Kurdish-speaking community - persecuted by IS, which sees it as a heretic - returned to their families after having been "kidnapped, tortured, forced to fight, raped" during the three years of ISIS rule over northern Iraq (2014-2017).

"If their nightmare has ended, they are still going through difficult times: their physical and mental health must be the priority so that they can truly reintegrate their families and their communities", underlines Amnesty which carried out interviews with dozens of children. yazidis. Some must relearn how to live after an amputation, others with nightmares, and most importantly, all must reconnect with a community that the jihadists have forced them to hate.

Readjust to life before

Many, kidnapped young, no longer speak Kurdish, but the Arabic learned from the jihadists. Some have even been renamed and above all, they were forced to bear arms. The girls have suffered rape and pregnancy, and are still paying the consequences today.

“[W] omen were enslaved, tortured and raped. They should no longer suffer, ”denounces Matt Wells of Amnesty International. Children must also be able to return to school, a place of socialization essential to their recovery, assures the NGO, which stresses that tens of thousands of Yazidis still live in refugee camps. A challenge for families who have ruined themselves to pay thousands of euros in ransom and get their child back, Amnesty said.
