  • Science: What is called a heat wave? AEMET takes into account three factors

A total of 40 provinces have yellow warnings (risk) and orange warnings (significant risk) for high maximum temperatures, which in the case of Biscay will be red (extreme risk), as well as yellow warnings for storms.

According to the prediction of the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), in this first day of heat wave -the first of this summer-, Vizcaya will be in warning of the highest level (red) due to heat, while in orange warning will be Córdoba , Granada , Jaén , Asturias , Baleares , Cantabria , Ciudad Real , Cuenca , Guadalajara , Toledo , Lleida , Badajoz , Madrid , Navarra , Álava , Guipúzcoa and La Rioja.

Thus, in cities such as Bilbao , 42ºC will be reached, a temperature that can also be registered in Córdoba and Jaén. In Granada, maximum temperatures can reach 41ºC, as in Toledo and Zaragoza, and 40ºC could be reached in Ciudad Real, Guadalajara, Lleida, Logroño and Pamplona.

In yellow warning for heat will be Almería , Sevilla , Huesca , Teruel , Zaragoza , Ávila , Burgos , León , Palencia , Segovia , Soria , Valladolid , Salamanca , Zamora , Albacete , Barcelona , Girona , Tarragona , Cáceres , Lugo , Ourense and Murcia , provinces that will touch 40ºC.

Meanwhile, AEMET has also activated yellow storm warnings in: Teruel, Zaragoza, Asturias, Cantabria, Ávila, Burgos, León, Palencia, Segovia, Soria, Valladolid, Guadalajara, Madrid and Álava.

During the day, in almost all the country it is expected that the skies will be little cloudy or clear, with some cloudy intervals in the Strait, Melilla and the north of the Canary Islands.

Likewise, evolutionary cloudiness will form in a large part of the peninsular interior and the Cantabrian coast, with some occasional scattered storms, generally with little precipitation, more likely in the mountainous systems, flat areas of the North plateau and the Cantabrian coast.

In Galicia , there is the possibility of morning fog banks in the interior and coastal fogs on the western coast, as well as the occurrence of haze on the Peninsula and Melilla.

Regarding temperatures, the maximum will increase in the Balearic Islands and the north and east of the Peninsula, being notable in its extreme north and even locally extraordinary in the Cantabrian, upper Ebro and Navarra. In the west, temperatures will tend to drop.

In any case, they will reach higher than normal values for the time in much of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. The minimums will also rise, in this case in Galicia, Castilla y León, Navarra, Aragón, Extremadura and western Andalusia.

Finally, this Thursday strong wind intervals will occur from the northeast in the northwest of Galicia and from the east in the Strait, tending to decrease in both areas.

Likewise, an east wind is expected in the Cantabrian, an eastern third of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands and a southern component in the rest of the Peninsula, while they will be trade winds in the Canary Islands and there is the possibility of strong or very strong gusts in storm areas.
