Up to 19 million hectares burned during the 2019-2020 fire season in Australia. In recent months, WWF has had a group of researchers assess the damage to wildlife, and the report they have now released thus points to a huge disaster. It is estimated that about three billion animals have died, and it is distributed as follows:

  • 143 million dead mammals
  • 180 million dead birds
  • 51 million dead frogs
  • 2.5 billion dead reptiles

Earlier this summer, an investigation was presented in the state of New South Wales, which was hit hard by the fires. It was stated that the koala may be completely extinct in the area as early as 2050 due to an increasingly warmer climate, which leads to further drought and future fires.
