Twenty-two people were killed in a collision between a minibus and a heavy truck in southern Mali, the transport ministry said on Tuesday. The accident, which also left 21 injured including seven serious, occurred around 9 am on national road 26 which connects the capital Bamako to Guinea, between Kangaba and Bancoumana.

Speeding and non-compliance with the Highway Code are involved, according to the ministry.

Call for caution

Road accidents are numerous in Mali, where the poor condition of the roads has in the past been a source of social tension. The ministry called on users to be extremely careful, "especially on the eve of the holiday" of Eid el-Adha, which begins on Friday, and which is synonymous with many trips in a largely Muslim country.

The road remains the most widely used means of transporting goods and people in this West African country without access to the sea.
