The head of the Anti-Corruption Commission of Malaysia, which was investigating the sovereign fund scandal (OneMDB), announced Friday her resignation in the wake of the collapse of the reform government and the assumption of power by a party pursued by corruption charges.

The "Alliance of Hope" coalition that won a historic victory in 2018 collapsed and toppled a coalition that took power for a long time, amid internal differences and Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad resigned.

Mahathir, 94, later sought to return to the prime minister, but he unexpectedly lost to former Interior Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who leads a coalition dominated by ethnic Malay Muslims in multi-ethnic countries.

Latifa Koya, a prominent human rights activist who has chaired the anti-corruption agency since last June, said she informed Mohieldin that she would step down at the weekend, stressing that she was not subject to pressure.

"I also informed the prime minister about our procedures and our continuous efforts to recover the funds of the sovereign fund looted from abroad," she said in a statement.

"He expressed full support for these steps," added the head of the resigned Anti-Corruption Commission.

Last week, Attorney General Tommy Thomas, who charged corruption with former Prime Minister Najib Abdel Razzaq, resigned over the Sovereign Fund scandal.

Billions of dollars were stolen from the "Wan Malaysia Development Burhard" fund and spent on luxury yacht purchases into valuable artwork, in a corruption process believed to affect Naguib and his close associates.

The Naguib Coalition - which ruled the country for six decades - was ousted from power in 2018, for reasons including the "One MDB" scandal and is brought before the court on corruption charges.

On Sunday, Yassin was sworn in as prime minister after Mahathir's resignation on February 24.

The Mahathir government had begun to recover funds from abroad believed to have been looted from the fund, and there were concerns that the presence of the United Malays National Organization (Najib Party) in the new ruling coalition would be reflected in the trial of Najib and others in connection with the fund scandal.
