Donald Trump's efforts to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula appear to be unsuccessful at all. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un insisted on Tuesday that his country's nuclear arsenal was the guarantor of its security. And, as every time a statement emanates from Pyongyang, these words are of a symbolic nature. Kim Jong-un this time seized the occasion of the 67th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice.

The future of the country assured "for eternity"

"Thanks to our effective and secure nuclear deterrent arsenal, the word war will no longer be used in this country," North Korea's supreme leader said during a meeting with veterans. Thus, "our national security and our future will be assured for eternity", he added, according to statements reported by the official KCNA agency. He thus showered the hopes of a possible renunciation of Pyongyang to its nuclear and ballistic programs.

The dialogue between Pyongyang and Washington is stumbling over the inability of the two parties to agree on the concessions that North Korea should make in exchange for the lifting of sanctions ordered to force it to give up its military programs. The Korean War (1950-1953) was punctuated by an armistice, not a peace agreement, which means that the two neighbors are still, technically, at a state of war.
