Sunday evening, Alain Cacheux, former socialist deputy from the North and former Lille municipal councilor, died at the age of 72, we learned from the PS du Nord federation. The mayor of Lille, Martine Aubry, hailed a "great figure in regional political life and the PS".

“Alain died last night in Lille, it seems from a heart attack. […] The socialist family of the North is really upset by its sudden disappearance, "the president of the PS North federation, Martine Filleul, told AFP.

He made social housing the fight of his life

“He is a politician who marked the federation by his specialty, social housing, which has been the common thread throughout his political life. Through this subject, he has acquired notoriety and proximity to activists, since social housing is an extremely important subject for socialists ”, she continued.

Originally from Valenciennes, in the North, Alain Cacheux was PS deputy for the third constituency of the North between 1997 and 2002 and then between 2007 and 2012. He was also regional councilor of Nord-Pas-de-Calais (1992-1997) municipal councilor of Lille (1989-2008), deputy mayor and, for a time, vice-president of the urban community of Lille (CUDL), which later became the European metropolis of Lille (MEL).

Animated by issues related to social housing, he chaired in particular the National Federation of Public Housing Offices (FOPH) and the social landlord Lille Métropole habitat (LMH).

Energy "clean to lift mountains"

"It is a great figure of regional political life and of the PS of the North who is leaving us", greeted Martine Aubry in a press release, evoking the memory of a "warm man and a real humanity", whose energy was "fit to lift mountains to defend the causes in which he believed".

“Defender and indefatigable promoter of social housing, he often told me […] that the mandate of which he was, at bottom, the most proud, was the presidency of the FOPH where he advanced many fights for the 'access to decent housing,' continued the mayor of Lille.

“More than a politician, Alain has remained an activist all his life, in what this term is most noble. He showed many that, as François Mitterrand said he admired, "where there is a will, there is a way" ", she wrote again.
