The Federal Security Service (FSB) has prevented a terrorist attack in Moscow , according to Russian agencies. Security forces found a suspicious man in abandoned garages in Jimki, a suburb near Moscow. When trying to arrest him, the man opened fire and shot him dead . Among their things they found a machine gun, three chargers and three grenades. The individual was planning an attack in Moscow. It is not clear where, but the plan was to carry out a "massive attack" in a crowded place .

The dejected terrorist lived in a rented apartment. There, according to the RIA Novosti agency, the agents found evidence that he was associated with terrorists in Syria - apparently from the Islamic State (ISIS) - and had long been preparing a terrorist attack .

According to the security services, he is a citizen of a Central Asian country , but no further information has been given on his nationality or age. A brother of his has been detained in a subsequent operation: he apparently wanted to prevent his brother from leaving for Syria.

Olga Vradiy, deputy head of the central office of the Investigative Committee in the Moscow region, told the media that a criminal case has been opened for an attempt on the life of a law enforcement officer . A search for possible accomplices is also underway.

Last week the security services detained 22 members of a terrorist organization called the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan in Moscow, Novosibirsk and Krasnoyarsk , according to the FSB. The militants encouraged terrorist attacks, recruited and transferred volunteers to Syria . These arrests were on July 23, a day after the FSB averted a terror attack in Kabardino-Balkaria, in the North Caucasus.

Since the beginning of the summer, the security forces have also prevented terrorist attacks in Jabarovsk, the Rostov region, Astrakan, Vladikavkaz, Simferopol and Chuvashia. In the past ten years, more than 160 terrorist attacks in Russia have been thwarted , according to recent data provided by FSB director Alexander Bortnikov. At least 3,000 Russians are fighting alongside the Islamic State in Syria, and a third of them come from Dagestan in the Caucasus.
