Joachim, 51, was spending his family vacation at Chateau de Cayx in southwestern France, a Danish royal family property in the Lot department, when he suffered a blood clot in the brain. Contrary to the initial version of the Danish media claiming that he had been helicoptered, the youngest son of Queen Margrethe II was taken by ambulance to the Toulouse University Hospital, 130 kilometers from the castle, the royal court said.

As for the length of the hospital stay, "it is too early to say anything at this time," spokeswoman Lene Balleby said. The prince had just met French journalists from the Dépêche du midi Friday afternoon, said the latter, describing a "relaxed" interview.

Joachim, whose father Henrik of Denmark was of French origin, is the younger brother of Crown Prince Frederik, who will succeed his 80-year-old mother. He has two sons from a first marriage, Nikolai, 20, and Felix, 18, and has two other children with Princess Marie, also of French descent: Henrik, eleven (well 11), and Athena, eight. .
