LaLiga decided on Sunday to cancel for "exceptional cause" the second division match between Deportivo La Coruna and Fuenlabrada, which could not be played on Monday due to numerous cases of coronavirus in the Fuenlabrada squad.

"Aware of the impossibility of fixing an even probable date for the holding of the meeting," the Spanish Professional Football League (LaLiga) announced that it had communicated to the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) "its agreement with the final suspension of the match for exceptional cause and / or force majeure ".

The game was originally scheduled for Monday July 20 for the last day of the Liga 2 season, but was postponed shortly before kick-off due to several cases of Covid-19 in Fuenlabrada's ranks.

"Also, La Liga will communicate to RFEF that the Elche CF team will be the one to play the play-offs for promotion" to the first division, LaLiga added in a statement.

The Madrid suburb side needed a draw to overtake Elche in the standings and access the play-offs for promotion to the Premier League.

"If the authorized sports institutions do not consider viable, in time and form, the holding of the match, CF Fuenlabrada will respect the decision," the club said in a statement, while showing its willingness to play if such had been. decision.

According to the latest tests carried out, 28 members of the Fuenlabrada team, players and staff alike, are infected with the coronavirus.

LaLiga appreciated the "enormous sacrifice" of "Fuenla" whose respect for the decision "means for his players the abandonment of what has been achieved with their effort and work throughout the season to facilitate the end of competition with the rest of the clubs ".
